Abstract :
In this paper, an analysis of the traffic load presented to the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) management channel is described. Through a study of operational SDH networks, the traffic patterns on the management channel have been found to conform generally to a number of generic profiles. Computer simulation models of SDH network elements and their associated manager have been developed and used to characterize the behaviour of the management network. The paper also describes the simulation results for the performance of the management network when the traffic network is operating under normal and alarm conditions, for a ring topology of different network sizes
