Abstract
A microprocessor based scheme for protection of stator winding of a large alternator has been devised for interturn, intraturn and turn to ground insulation failures. The proposed scheme protects the entire stator winding leaving no unprotected zone. The software used here is simpler in logic, but quicker in operation, without compromising reliability in any way. Complex subroutines are avoided for all arithmetic operations. Hence the execution time in each cycle is minimised. The total acquisition time of the supervisory loop, that ensures complete protection of all the three phases, comes not more than 30 milli-seconds
