Abstract :
The formation of new US university/industry/government interdisciplinary technology development and transfer centers is discussed. The new joint initiatives are intended to help launch new technology research and development initiatives or regain areas under global assault. These consortia programs often involve improvements in design for manufacture, hastening technology transfer and commercialization, improving local and national competitiveness, and increasing the opportunity and appeal for technology-based economic development in the region of the university location. Issues discussed include center and program formation, time frames, challenges and risks, and funding and budgets
