Abstract
If the visual, audio and computer worlds could be unified under a common digital umbrella, all media would essentially coalesce into a single, comprehensive resource. This is the concept from which DVD evolved. Super-density DVD, with its extraordinary 17 GB capacity, is an ideal medium for providing theatre-quality movies at home. Despite its extremely compact size, the images and sounds are astonishingly vivid. What´s more its versatility extends to complex computer applications and high-volume media. The paper gives an overview of the DVD developments so far and underlines the importance of DVD technology for wide-screen entertainment in the home
