Abstract
One of the most important limitations on the rate at which inspection systems can be produced is the lack of flexibility of existing design strategies. This paper aims to show some of the background which is important to the design process in this area. It attempts to reveal some of the constraints to which workers are subject while designing a new inspection system, not least the trade-offs between relevant parameters which must be optimised if the system is to be completely effective and to achieve its full potential
