Abstract
This paper presents the experimental results of using He (helium) and SF6 (sulfur-hexaflouride) gas mixtures in order to reduce windage loss of vertical shaft type generator/flywheel system. Helium reduces the loss much more, but its electric breakdown voltage is the lowest. The results show that between 15 and 5 percent of He and SF6 mixtures could reduce the windage loss significantly compared to that of air. The gap and surface breakdown voltages of the gases used in the experiment have also been measured
