Abstract
This paper presents an investigation into the impact that PWM harmonics have on iron losses in an induction motor. In order to isolate the effect on iron losses, a special test motor is used, with a plastic rotor cage. The special motor is operated at standstill and input power is measured and allocated as stator copper loss or iron loss. Using sinusoidal and PWM supply conditions, the influence of amplitude modulation index and switching frequency are investigated.
