Abstract
In the development of a 40-yr live motor design, the factors that lead to motor failure are considered. An analysis of those components most affected is given, including consideration of enclosure, rotating elements, electrical winding, materials, and the manufacturing processes. It is concluded that since the winding is the heart of an electric motor, the selection of proper insulation to protect the winding from premature failure is essential
