Abstract :
This paper investigates the performance, emission and combustion characteristics of a Compression Ignition engine (C.I.) with partially stabilizedzirconia (PSZ) coated internal jet piston using Jatropha methyl ester (JME). Experiments were conducted in a four stroke 3.7 kWwater cooled direct diesel engine with PSZ coated internal jet piston engine and the base engine with Jatropha methyl ester as fuel The measured values were analyzed and compared with the base engine. The results indicated that the brake thermal efficiency was increased by 3 % and the brake specific energy consumption was decreased by 14% for Jatropha methyl ester (JME) with PSZ internal jet piston compared to that of the base engine. The exhaust emissions like carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke emissions were decreased while the NOx emissions were increased with JME at full load compared to that of the base engine. The peak pressure and heat release rate were increased and the ignition delay and combustion duration were decreased for the internal piston with JME compared to that of the base engine.
