  • Abstract
The Asia Alternative Energy Unit (ASTAE) has examined solar home system programs worldwide over the past three years, focusing on four specific countries. The results from these case studies, which include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Dominican Republic and the Philippines, have assisted in identifying the key ingredients of successful photovoltaic (PV) programs as well as approaches to remove financial and institutional barriers of PV use in developing countries. These findings emphasize the need to overcome the initial cost barrier of solar home systems, establish responsive and sustainable infrastructure and provide quality products and services. The advantages of solar home systems are highlighted and comparisons are made between PV use and traditional options, such as extending the grid. Major obstacles to PV promotional projects are discussed along with recommended solutions and best practices
