Abstract :
The use of layered or hierarchical frameworks for the design and implementation of algorithms for comprehending and controlling systems is quite common. We describe two such hierarchical systems and then go on to attempt to formalize the properties of multi-layered frameworks. The first example is a video-based traffic surveillance system. The second example is a system designed to control the movement of vehicles on an automated highway
