Abstract
This document provides an introduction to the basic concepts of special protection systems (SPS), the studies performed for their classification in accordance with the criteria of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC), the criteria applied by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for the utilization of SPS in Ontario, and the experiences of using SPS in the electricity market in Ontario.
