Abstract
The Boston Central Artery/Ted Williams Tunnel project incorporates a state of the art traffic management software system. Traffic incident response strategies have been implemented using a real-time knowledge based expert system. This system graphically displays device networks and response plans to aid in software development and testing. The system develops lane and tunnel closure strategies and detects conflicts within these strategies before they are implemented. The expert system is integrated with other traffic management software components including an operator user interface. This software provides a rapid, flexible response system to serve motorists using the roadway
