  • Abstract
Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) adaptation layer 2 (AAL2) supports effective transmission of low-bit-rate, short, variable length and real-time voice data. For this purpose, AAL2 assembles voice packets from many channels into a single ATM cell. Cell assembly must be done separately VC by VC (virtual connection), so a buffer management scheme is required. In this paper, we propose the shared-buffer scheme as a cell assembly queue (CAQ) management scheme, and analyze the performance of a voice over AAL2 system which uses the proposed scheme. We focus on the system performance in terms of the cell loss probability due to buffer shortage
