Abstract :
The world of radio is adopting digital technology at a rapid pace, in some cases without considering precisely why. This paper takes a critical look at the transition from the use of analogue to digital technology within the railway sector, a transition which is still in its infancy, identifying both pros and cons of the use of digital techniques. The use and modification of public radio standards are considered and some of the key implications identified and discussed. This includes services offered to the railway community and, equally importantly, identifies features which are required by the users but which are not easily achieved. Some likely developments up to the turn of the century are described, including key points which must be considered soon if the railway industry is to make maximum use of the opportunities offered without incurring excessive costs
