  • Abstract
This paper sets out a formal method for the determination of optimum control strategies during production breaks on continuous induction billet heating lines. The method utilises the calculus of variations to minimise a cost function appropriate to a production run over a time period that includes an interval when heated billets cannot be forged. The solution of the equations derived is the subject of ongoing research
