Abstract
A wide-area damping control system (WADC) has recently been developed by China southern power grid (CSG), to enhance the damping performance of inter-area oscillations in CSG. It´s the first time that PMU measurements are used as input to a continuous feedback control system in a real bulk power grid. The WADC uses modulation of two HVDC systems for power system damping. The control system comprises phasor measurements at six 500 kV substations, fiber-optic communications, real-time control computers, control units at rectifier station and interface between HVDC and WADC. This paper introduces the designing aspects of the WADC and the subsequent implementation and operation issues. Results of closed-loop testing in the field will be presented. The paper concludes with a future development of the wide-area control in CSG.
