  • Abstract
Summary form only given. L-3 Communications Electron Devices manufactures a full line of high power inductive output tubes (IOTs) and is currently investigating UHF IOTs for MW class accelerator applications. Computational and hardware studies are underway to design a compact, highly efficient device with CW output power in the 500 kW to 1 MW range. The higher output powers typically required in accelerator applications are difficult to achieve with a single beam IOT because of increased grid dissipation. A solution is to combine several optimized IOT guns in a circular arrangement, forming a multi-beam IOT (MBIOT). The MBIOT design has ten to twenty beams for peak output power of 600 kW to 1.2 MW.
