Abstract
Today´s cellular phone system has grown dramatically during the last decade and shows signs of increasing growth in the future. This phenomenal growth, coupled with rapid improvements in components, has pushed miniaturization of cellular phones to meet user demands for low-cost, lightweight, pocket-sized communication devices. This paper presents a brief overview of the operation of a typical Radio Frequency (RF) cellular handset. Next, Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters are compared with two major competing filter technologies. Trends and requirements of SAW filters in Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) and Personal Communication System (PCS) phone applications are reviewed, and finally, challenges facing SAW designers are discussed
