  • Abstract
This paper presents results of a theoretical and experimental programme to investigate the propagation of ultrasound along fibres for the generation and detection of Lamb waves. Furthermore, the feasibility of a fully embedded system will be discussed. Ultrasonic energy is introduced to the fibres from a piezoceramic block via an epoxy bond. A finite element analysis of the ultrasonic coupling shows that, as a result of the epoxy bond acting as a mode converter, the lateral modes of the piezoceramic transducer are coupled into the fibre more efficiently than the thickness mode. This is confirmed experimentally
