Abstract
Taking an industrial boiler as the controlled plant, the authors present a hierarchical intelligent control structure and algorithms for expert control, multimode control and self-tuning PID control. This hybrid controller adjusts its structure to maintain good performance over a wide variation of plant operating conditions. The results of digital and hybrid simulation as well as industrial field testing show that a hierarchical scheme which adopts different control algorithms based on the extent of deviation, incremental deviation and working condition is feasible. It is shown that the control of an industrial coal-fired boiler is improved by the intelligent hybrid controller
