With the rapid development of market-oriented economy, urban heritage have aroused wide concern because of its multi-values which included history, culture, economy and so on. Development of market-oriented economy not only bring opportunities to the protection of urban heritage, but also bring negative effects owing to lack of reasonable and scientific protection method. As an important part of urban heritage, ancient towns possess unique architectural and cultural features which make them to gain the favor of tourism market. Exactly because of close connection between ancient towns and the market, the protection and utilization of ancient towns are facing a variety of opportunities and challenges which arise from the market-oriented economy. This paper takes the case of ancient towns in Sichuan to study the protection and utilization strategies of urban heritage in the market-oriented economy background.
