Abstract
There is a diversity of opinions on the potential impact of information systems (ISs) on individuals, organizations, and society. Four companies, considered leaders in their industries, could serve as models for other organizations. This comparative study of the role of information management was based on printed data, interviews, and questionnaires used within the companies, and on public domain information. Their management, IS structures, and functionality are an excellent example of the effective use of information at the right time. The role of ISs has influenced management styles and has reduced uncertainty in the decision-making process. A protocol to consider in developing an IS is suggested
