  • Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new method which utilizes change of directional information in the DCT (discrete cosine transform) domain to detect scene breaks automatically. At first, each incoming frame is split into 8 by 8 blocks. Then we decide the direction of each block using the fact that the DCT coefficients contain the directional information in them. We detect the scene breaks by examining the changes of directional information in blocks between the neighboring frames. The proposed method can control the threshold value which can be used as a conditional parameter to obtain an accurate and rapid result in detecting scene breaks. Also, the proposed method is able to detect a variety of different types of scene breaks. One more advantage of the proposed method is the possibility of scene break detection using JPEG or MPEG bit streams as is without DCT
