Abstract
The role of the engineering manager as a team leader is addressed. Positive leadership practices that an engineer manager can adopt with team members are discussed. Recent research has identified five major categories of general leadership practices. The author extends these concepts into team situations and provides practical ideas for the engineering manager. The set of general leadership practices are: (1) challenging the process; (2) inspiring a shared process; (3) enabling others to act; (4) modeling the way; and (5) encouraging the heart
