Abstract :
A basic model for researching R&D management in a strategic alliance, by extending the standard theory of firms is presented. The model indicates that firms with complementary skills and resources in a strategic alliance will be better off in terms of R&D cost, profit, and competitiveness. An optimal level of R&D for the strategic alliance and its component firms is derived by using the basic model
