Abstract
Site-selective spectroscopic techniques are used to investigate the occupation of multiple sites in crystal hosts by uranium ions of different valence states. The issue of which valence state gives rise to the 1.5 μm saturable absorption and passive Q-switching in uranium-doped calcium fluoride, CaF2:U2+ laser crystal is of particular interest
