Abstract :
Series compensation of transmission overhead lines is a well-proven technique with more than 50 years experience. But even though, the technique can cause severe problems for the protection relays if they are not well designed to handle this type of application and the settings not properly set. In order to verify the suitability of the ABB REL531 distance protection for installation on the series compensated lines between Tucurui-Presidente Dutra, decision was taken by ELN to make real time simulation. The simulation took place at FURNAS in Rio de Janerio during the autumn 2002.
