Abstract

The increasing size and complexity of managed networks requires flexible and distributed management services that are dynamically customizable. One solution is management by delegation, which can be implemented in a variety of ways. We propose a Java-based delegation mechanism, where customizable services are implemented using Java program fragments called MIBlets, which are downloaded to servers and operate on MIB data. We have developed a prototype version of a network management system based on Java and ORB, and have implemented the proposed delegation mechanism. Performance experiments show that MIBlets greatly reduce the network traffic and improve the response time
