Abstract :
Multiple wavelength systems obviously require more optical components than single wavelength systems. Not only the necessary multiplexing and de-multiplexing functions add component complexity, but more importantly, the addition of extra space switching components enables the implementation of sophisticated routing mechanisms, offering superb operational network flexibility. In order to arrive at a reliable and cost effective solution for such wavelength routing, integration of several functionality´s in a single packaged component will become a necessity. At least two technologies have the potential to provide such solutions: III-V semiconductors and polymer optoboards. The latter option will be described below, covering wavelength multiplexing and space switching based on polymer waveguides. The combination of multiplexers and switches on a single substrate will be a major improvement in system reliability and performance. Both functions have individually been demonstrated with good performance
