Abstract
A technical project is under way in Japan to develop a high-power self-commutated converter for future DC interconnection between AC systems and HVDC transmission. In the first stage of the project, prototype models for a 300 MW GTO converter were developed. The models were subjected to factory testing to verify the technologies for series connection of multiple GTOs, a gate power supply from the main circuit, and regeneration of energy in snubber circuits. Satisfactory results were obtained
