Abstract :
We successfully simultaneously made high-performance side-polished fibers with a long effective length. Consistencies among experimental measurements and theoretical estimates were good. Selective modal removal was demonstrated. If the index of the added medium was within the effective indices of two guided modes, we can have a better selectivity and smaller excess loss. For side-polished fibers with such a long effective length, we could make modal filters better in the future
