  • Abstract
A novel approach to building qualitative models for vision based on the functionally relevant attributes of each object is presented. The spatial discretization used is derived systematically, and is complete under the conditions of tangency, no-contact, and overlap. Each object is decomposed into simpler qualitative generalized cylinders, and the join operations are specified by a new three-dimensional qualitative model for space. Results are shown for applications in two and three dimensions
