Abstract
An XML/XPath query language that operates over XML documents and produces XML documents as results is introduced and illustrated. It provides a basis for view definition, view integration, query processing, and optimization. The XMark Benchmark for XML databases is used to demonstrate the functionality and performance of the prototyped implementation of the query language and system. Results for query performance using our object-oriented database implementation and a relational implementation from the literature are compared.
