Abstract
The European Community RACE program, which deals with the future of integrated broadband communication (IBC), is discussed. The program contributes to the development of an overall strategy for IBC as well as to the development of technologies which are necessary for the provision of IBC services by the year 1995. IBC provides the user with telephone, data, TV, and other new services via one network. Broadband communication means that the system has a great transmission capacity, allowing the individual user to access a great number of TV programs, make telephone calls, send telecopies, and use other traditional or advanced communications services via one network connection and one terminal. The main areas addressed by RACE are networks and switching, optical communication, signal processing, advanced information processing, and customer systems and user friendliness
