Abstract
This paper outlines the functions of BSI in supporting British Industry, with particular emphasis on the development of generic standards relating to the design and development of reliable products. The functions of standards are described and the role of national Technical Committees in producing standards is explained. The procedures for developing standards through drafting, consultation and consensus are outlined. The increased emphasis on International standards is noted. The role of the national technical committee responsible both for national standards and for providing the UK contribution to international reliability and maintainability standards is explained. A list of generic national standards on reliability is presented. The value of these standards is indicated in terms of the importance of reliability, both to the manufacturer and to the customer
