Abstract
Successful performance of power grid needs to deal with the balancing of supply and demand in real time. In order to improve the quality of electric grid, a significant amount of power is necessary to be injected into the grid to solve the power system failures, such as voltage dip, reactive power rush and so on. These electric accidents can be well improved by energy storage systems (ESS), which can inject/absorb active and reactive power into or from a system timely. In this paper, several prevalent energy storage types and their characteristics are introduced and analyzed contrastively. The results manifest that the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system has a relatively significant and efficient role in the service of power grid.
