  • Abstract
Today power PV systems are already cost-effective and commonly employed in a wide range of remote applications. Because systems can be delivered in all sizes, PV systems can take advantage of niche markets as they develop. Several pioneering megawatt-scale photovoltaic plants are already generating reliable power to utility grids, providing essential field construction and operating experience and a realistic picture of current total system casts and performance. In addition to a drastic reduction of cost of components, new design, construction and operational strategy are necessary to justify the widening of this niche market. The author discusses the International Energy Agency´s cooperation programme on PV power systems, experience with large scale PV plants, and R&D priorities for large scale plants
