Abstract
A novel flywheel energy storage system is proposed in this study. The converter for the flywheel energy storage system is composed of an AC/DC, a DC/AC and a motor/generator converter. In motoring mode (the line is on), the AC/DC converter lets the system deliver sinusoidal input current and boosts the DC link voltage. In generating mode (the line is off), the DC/AC supplies sinusoidal voltage to load. The Halbach array machine is selected for the design of a three-phase motor/generator for the flywheel energy storage system. The energy storage system consists of a composite wheel and a magnetic bearing resulting in the reduction of the system loss
