Abstract :
The Programmable Communications Interface (PCI), a novel VLSI component capable of efficiently implementing a wide spectrum of intelligent bit-serial protocols, is described. In particular, the PCI achieves a low cost implementation of the channel interface specified by the new P×64 standard for video communications. The PCI has been successfully implemented in a 0.7-μm CMOS compacted array technology. Application programming of the PCI is supported by an assembler and a simulator. The PCI architecture is described, a programming example is given, and a system design incorporating the PCI is illustrated
