Abstract :
In February of 1995, PCMCIA released the first major update to its Standards since the PCMCIA Standards, Release 2.1 in November 1992. This new Standard, titled the PC Card Standard enabled many exciting new features that served both goals of the association - meeting the changing needs of the mobile computing industry and preparing the technology for new markets. The first goal of the PC Card Standard was to allow for better compatibility among PC Card products. The second goal was to address both current and future market needs. Features such as low-voltage support, multiple-functionality, DMA support, and a power management interface all directly addressed the changing demands of the mobile computing market. And to address future market needs for higher bandwidth capabilities, the new Standard opened the way for exciting high-speed applications with the addition of CardBus allowing 32-bit and busmastering capabilities using the same 68-pin interface
