Abstract
This paper presents how Alcatel Canada Inc. Transport Automation Systems (Alcatel) has developed a universal workstation (UWS) for London Underground´s Jubilee Line Extension project. This control console is designed to integrate the various aspects of railway operations to provide a superior level of system supervision and control, without compromising the operators ability to operate in a safe and efficient manner. The paper outlines the advanced human machine interface (HMI) principles and ergonomic guidelines followed to develop what is considered an effective “state of the art” command and control console. The paper further demonstrates how Alcatel engineers, in conjunction with the Jubilee Line operations staff, designed and developed the UWS. Finally, the paper discusses the lessons learned from this experience
