Title :
Clear Zones-technology for liveable cities implementing the environmental agenda
Author_Institution :

Abstract :
Dense urban living will continue to be the experience of the great majority in the UK. Air quality, noise and congestion problems are most acute in these areas. Traffic growth seems unstoppable, bringing more congestion and pollution. Technology needs to be developed which can help make urban areas successful and desirable places to be. The concept of Clear Zones may be defined by what it is not - it is an urban area which does not suffer from pollution and traffic chaos - but neither is it massive pedestrianisation, inaccessible to the less mobile, empty and lacking vitality. The alternatives to Clear Zones are bleak scenarios. Clear Zones is explained as technology for liveable cities because it combines the thinking of expert and sophisticated analysts of urban futures with an evaluation of the role which technology could play in the city of the future.
