Abstract
The paper is a preface for the conference on e-systems engineering. E-systems are an integral part of the increasingly prevalent complex, pervasive, embedded, and ubiquitous computing solutions that have been, or are being, developed. The fundamental elements of e-systems engineering, based on shared standards, web services, service-oriented architecture (SOA), and distributed data, are changing the way computer and software systems are designed, architected, delivered, and consumed, arguably meriting e-systems engineering as a separate and self-contained field of study. The Developments of e-Systems Engineering (DeSE) conference series has been established in response to the rapidly rising number of areas in which these integrated esystems are encountered. The intention of the DeSE conference series is to act as a platform and an increasingly essential forum, dedicated to discussing and disseminating advancements in an emerging, more clearly defined and specific field of e-systems engineering with its wideranging applications and implications across all subject areas. DeSE 2009 has captured diverse e-systems engineering research contributions, in particular, in the areas of e-health, e-government, e-learning, e-security, and e-science and technology with more than 100 paper submissions.
