Abstract
Several current-sensitive and temperature-sensitive safety device technologies exist and can be designed into pack circuits. Three broad situations must be protected against: 1) pack-internal and pack-external short circuits; 2) charger malfunctions; and 3) abuse or misuse by end users. This paper compares and contrasts the characteristics of various safety practices and devices used in designing and assembling high-energy battery packs, including new developments in polymeric PTC technology
