Abstract
DC pre-breakdown phenomena and breakdown characteristics in the presence of free metallic particle in liquid nitrogen are studied experimentally. The results show that microdischarge occurs when a charged particle is approaching oppositely charged electrodes and intense microdischarge can trigger the complete breakdown of the tested gap. The breakdown voltage of uniform field gap with the free particle might severely fall below that of a point-to-plane gap without particle in liquid nitrogen
