Abstract :
The authors present an overview of coning motion errors, with particular emphasis on the contribution of nonideal strapdown gyro characteristics. An analytical derivation of drift errors due to both undetected motion and imperfect gyros is provided with the expression for gyro effects representing a new result. Typical compensation techniques which are used to correct for undetected coning motion are mentioned. Finally, an example is included which demonstrates that the common approach to coning compensation may actually degrade performance in the presence of imperfect gyro characteristics.<>
