Abstract :
Autonomous mobile systems, defined as systems able to decide the path they will follow, are classified according to the environment they move in. The author gives a classification of possible environments and determines the requirements for autonomous systems. The general components of autonomous mobile systems are described, with emphasis on sensors, the control structure of data processing, and the computer system to run the programs. Micromice as examples of autonomous systems in a narrow-road environment and autonomous mobile robots intended for flat ground environments are described in their general structure, control structures, and computer systems. Predictions of future autonomous automation are given, with a focus on the combined use of CCD cameras and image-recognition algorithms
