Abstract
This paper focuses on a voice mail system utilizing speech recognition for both the voice messaging task in subscriber mode and audio text applications for non-subscribers. The system (called PhoneMailTM) has been deployed in Germany and introduced to the U.S. market by Siemens Rolm Communications. It uses state-of-the-art speaker independent phoneme-based HMM discrete word/digit recognizer with on-line robust channel adaptation in order to improve performance over telephone lines. Aspects of the field test, the user interface and some applications are outlined and discussed
