Abstract :
The risk of failure in power system components may vary with the change of environment, weather and other operating conditions. The other factors that will contribute to the risk of a system cascading collapse is due to the effect of hidden failure in a protection system. This paper presents a computationally accurate method in determining the risk assessment of a system cascading collapse considering the hidden failure of a protection system. A 73-bus IEEE Reliability Test System (RTS) is used to verify the robustness of the methodology in a system cascading collapse assessment. Based on the results obtained from this study, a greater risk of cascading collapse is attained as the total loading system is increased. This study can be used as guidance for the utility to perform early planning in mitigating the cascading collapse from spreading to the entire power system. This study also can be used to determine the critical loading which significantly contributes to the risk of a system cascading failure.
